12 Days of Christmas

The 12 Days of Christmas is one of my FAVORITE parts of Christmas is the fact that we all look outward a little more during this season. It is a time of year that we help the homeless a little more, we notice the suffering around us, we like to give things to others.

I first had this impact my life when I was younger and my Dad was out of a job. Things were a little tight and we had a family in our community who gave us the amazing gift of the 12 Days of Christmas or as they called it The Christmas Friend! Each night for 12 nights the doorbell would ring and we would all run to the door and find what gift had been left on the doorstep anonymously. I cannot express to you, the joy and excitement this brought to our family at a time of year that could have been difficult.

My family took The 12 Days of Christmas tradition and continued on doing this for other families and it is one of my loveliest memories from our youth. The excitement of doing something in secret and our thoughts turning to another person or family was wonderful.

After Cal and I got married we also continued this tradition of The 12 Days of Christmas. I have some of the best memories of running to the door at 8 months pregnant with 3 little kids in the car and a husband out of town, ringing the doorbell and waddle/running back to the car as fast as I could so as not to get caught. I would get in the car with the kids cheering and the teenagers in the home running after me to find out who this “Christmas Friend” is!

The 12 Days of Christmas does not have to be expensive and I will share many ideas for all budgets. I would suggest this for any family-especially if you need to be focusing on other people in order to bless your life.

We have done this purely to people we love, we have delivered to families who have lost a loved one in the last year. We have given to widows, large families, unemployed friends, friends with health problems. It does not need to be people who are struggling but it certainly can be. For us it has varied from year to year.

Here are some ideas that will help get your brain flowing with ideas!
