Creating spiritual protection for our families can be a difficult thing in todays world. We are surrounded by distractions on a daily basis. Here are some experiences and ways that I have learned while raising our family, to help in developing spiritual protection for the family against the world.
Answers in the scriptures
When our oldest was starting middle school, I came to the realization that the world may have more influence on her at this point than we do as parents. I spent a lot of time on my knees asking for guidance. What were the BEST, most effective things that I could do to help fortify and spiritually protect MY family from the forces and influences of the world?
One night as I was reading the Book of Mormon, I was especially touched by Alma chapter 50. At this point, Moroni is preparing to defend his people against the attacks of the Lamanites. He “did not stop making preparations for war”. His preparation was consistent. He “caused that his armies…should dig up heaps of earth around the city” and that “there should be timbers built to the height of man”. He built towers to overlook the fences and pickets. Then, it says this in verse 6: “THUS MORONI DID PREPARE STRONGHOLDS against the coming of their enemies”.
The question so clearly came into my mind. What strongholds have I prepared to defend my family from the ENEMY? What are my heaps of earth, timbers, frame of pickets? Obviously some of these strongholds included things that we had been and are still counseled to do consistently in our homes; Family scripture study, Family prayer, Family Home Evening, etc. Were these just things that I did to check off my list or were they actual defenses? How were we really doing on spiritually protecting and defending our family? Our kids fought with each other, they complained about getting up early to read scriptures, they played or fought during family home evening. Was any of this making a difference? How could I really improve our defense and how could I plan an offensive strategy as well?
Alma 50:12 states: “Thus Moroni, with his armies which did increase daily because of the assurance of protection which HIS WORKS DID BRING FORTH UNTO THEM…” Because Moroni listened to inspiration, he was able to protect his people.” I knew that if I-as a mother-sought, listened and acted on inspiration from God that I could protect my family from the world. Over the next few years we implemented several things, got rid of a few and changed the way we did some of them. There were some successes and some areas of defeat but I knew we were on the right path. I was wanting to do anything to provide spiritual protection for the family. Below are a few things learned.
Acting on answers for our family
We decided that it was important to have the kids look forward to scripture study so every morning we had scripture study with a big breakfast. By the time the kids were woken up, the table was set (all paper products mind you, but that is a story for a different time!), juice poured, a hot breakfast was on the table. (Easy hot breakfast recipe links at the end of this post!) We would pray over the food and the scripture study. Those who could read, read some verses and the others, listened while we ate. We had some great resources which I will link at the bottom of this post* that we used which were relevant to what our family was facing at the time.
Time together rather than amount to read
I am a big believer in reading for time rather than amount. There were mornings we would read only 5 verses and then just talk about what we read or situations we were facing that related to what we read. Just doing that was a huge step in defending and spiritually protecting our family. Especially with little kids, just the act of reading together (even if just a few verses), is what they will remember.
Consistent daily traditions
Remember in Alma 50, it says that Moroni “did not stop making preparations”. To keep our mornings consistent, we created a morning tradition of singing “Choose The Right” together as a family a few minutes before the kids walked out the door. It was one of the few songs I could play on the piano. I loved that it was one of the last things they thought about as they headed out the door. “Choose the right, when a choice is placed before you.”
Scripture Study and Singing Pay-off
After a few months of this, I was feeling pretty good about how things were going-at least with scripture study and our morning routine. One Sunday morning, Cal was at meetings early and I was getting the 5 kids ready for 8:00 church: I’m sure many of you have been there. I was Primary Chorister at the time so we would try to get there at 7:30 so I could get the Primary room set up. I could hear the sweet sounds of singing coming from the downstairs hall. “Choose The Right!” It was a moment of dual feelings. It was definitely a “face palm” parent moment as I watched my son color with permanent marker on the walls while singing “Choose The Right”. As I rounded the corner, a part of me wanted to cry, but there was a sweet feeling inside that witnessed to me that we were doing what was need for our family.
From that time forward we have changed our routine many times with schedule changes in the kids school, jobs, early morning seminary, etc.
We even had a few years when we had three separate scripture studies and family prayers in the mornings. I remember my Mom saying she would rather send us without a lunch, that without the Spirit. I get it now.. and I will do anything to defend and spiritually protect my family from the evils of the world!
- A main purpose of this blog will be to share with you, ways that we have found as a family to develop strongholds and defend our home and family. I would love to hear your ideas that have been successful!
Ideas for spiritually protecting the family in the home
- Recognize the need
- Ask for guidance on what YOUR family needs
- Seek the answers in the scriptures
- Act on those answers
- Discuss the strongholds that you have in your family. Things that are already set in place as well as ideas you want to put in place to spiritually protect your family (Personal and Family scripture study, personal and family prayer, church attendance, seminary attendance. As a family build a “stronghold” out of Lego’s or Lincoln Logs. Label the different blocks with things you are doing or you want to do. A visual for kids (and some adults ;)) will help them to see more clearly why these things are important.
