I was reading in Alma 57 the other day. Starting in vs. 18 we read about Heleman and his “little band of two thousand and sixty [who} fought most desperately.”(Alma 57:19) Heleman described these young men as “firm and undaunted…they did obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness; yea and even according to their faith it was done unto them; and I did remember the words which they said unto me that their mothers taught them.” (Alma 57:20-21) None of these are unlike our children-the Stripling Warriors of today!
These young people were prepared-by parents, specifically mothers as many of the fathers were not living. These mothers understood what it meant to be a “mother who knows.” (Mothers Who Know-Julie Beck)
They knew what it took to train the warriors of their day!
Now, I could take this entire post to talk about mothers- our influence, our responsibilities and more, but that is not what this post is about. As we continue reading in Alma 57, verses 25-27 teaches us this concept:
25 And it came to pass that there were two hundred, out of my two thousand and sixty, who had fainted because of the loss of blood; nevertheless, according to the goodness of God, and to our great astonishment, and also the joy of our whole army, there was not one soul of them who did perish; yea, and neither was there one soul among them who had not received many wounds.
26 And now, their preservation was astonishing to our whole army, yea, that they should be spared while there was a thousand of our brethren who were slain. And we do justly ascribe it to the miraculous power of God, because of their exceeding faith in that which they had been taught to believe—that there was a just God, and whosoever did not doubt, that they should be preserved by his marvelous power.
27 Now this was the faith of these of whom I have spoken; they are young, and their minds are firm, and they do put their trust in God continually.
As I read this, a very clear picture came into my mind. A picture of our youth today, young men and young women, my own children-the warriors of today, suffering on a battlefield from loss of blood, from serious wounds and injuries, yet not one who perished. This is life today, life in the gospel. With the battle our youth fight every day against Satan. Most, if not all will receive spiritual wounds-some more serious than others but if we, as mothers can teach repentance, the constant love of God and trust in God continually, we can spare them from the spiritual death that is so prevalent in todays society.
We as mothers have been prepared by our own mothers to lead these youth- the warriors of today, into a battle that will not end until the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. This battlefield is filled with snipers who are constantly shooting pornography at our children, grenades of drug use, machine guns of media that distract our children away from their most important responsibilities. Each of us have a job and a different role to play, for each of our children have different needs. It is my greatest hope that we, as mothers of modern day stripling warriors will do ALL WE CAN to prepare our children for the battles they are facing today. Pray for guidance. Support one another. Listen and act on the inspired words and counsel of latter day prophets. Pray daily for inspiration then act on it. God trusts you in His greatest work-His warriors of today.
Rise to that task. Don’t doubt yourself. Go forward with faith!
