A clean home is a happy home: unlock happiness now.

If you are anything like me your social media is full of tik-tok’s, Instagram reels, YouTube videos, and more, depicting in lighthearted ways, moms rage-cleaning, poking fun at how moms everywhere speed clean before guests come over, or even moms themselves making a living sharing with you how they clean their homes. These women are able to make a living with videos like this because the truth for most moms IS that a clean home is a happy home.

A quick little disclaimer, my house is rarely clean, I have two under two and both are absolute tornadoes, but it is a goal I am working towards daily. Really, I am always cleaning, and you wouldn’t know it lol. So, this post is not to shame any mom for how clean or unclean their homes are, but to share insights, knowledge, and perspective on this common phrase. Because when I take a step back and analyze my emotions in a clean space versus a dirty one, the difference is stark! Upon observing this, I wanted to learn more. So I did some research, and I’m ready to share it with you; Let’s get to it!

In this post we will be discussing the science behind tidy spaces and mental health and the connection between clean environments and physical health. I will also be sharing scriptures from the New Testament in the Bible(KJV), The Book of Mormon, and a work called the Doctrine & Covenants that can help provide some spiritual insight into this phrase and its truth. Then we will move on to some tips, tricks, products, and schedules that can help you unlock the happiness that a clean home will provide.

A clean home is a happy home

The Science behind a clean home is a happy home

To start let’s answer this question, is there really science that shows a clean organized home can influence your mood and perceived happiness? The short answer is yes, and the findings show a positive correlation between the two. A clean home is a happy home. Studies show that an organized environment positively affects a woman’s mood and a disorganized environment negatively affects it.

In this particular Norwegian study on women’s mental health within cleaning professions, it found that “Certain working environment characteristics appear to increase an employee’s susceptibility to mental health problems.”1 and even states, “Recent findings suggest that variables such as… poor organizational climate result in organizational misbehaviour, lowered subjective well-being, and long sickness periods among unskilled women.”2 Something that probably doesn’t come as a shock to most women, right? Now this study was done specifically on women in a cleaning profession, so it is not including all of the other things a mother is expected, by society, to do within her own home.

The craziest thing I learned from this study was that “Research findings generally suggest that the relationship between environmental factors and psychiatric symptoms is most prominent in women.3” Which helps explain why the dishes piled in the sink and the dirty clothes on the floor, and not in the hamper, don’t seem to faze your husband at all but drive you up the wall. These findings support the fact that a clean home is a happy home, specifically for women.

The Scripture

Now let’s take a look at some scriptures that also support this claim beginning with Ephesians 5:2-5 “2 and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. 3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints. 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 for this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Alma 7:21

“And he doth not dwell in unholy temples; neither can filthiness or anything which is unclean be received into the kingdom of God; therefore I say unto you the time shall come, yea, and it shall be at the last day, that he who is filthy shall remain in his filthiness.”

1 Nephi 10:21

“… no unclean thing can dwell with God;”

1 Nephi 15:34

“But behold, I say unto you, the kingdom of God is not filthy, and there cannot any unclean thing enter into the kingdom of God…”

D&C 109:8 (Doctrine & Covenants)

Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing, and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;

Cleanliness and cleanness in scripture can be interpreted as moral or physical. Many of these scriptures lean more towards the moral definition and interpretation, but I felt they were worth mentioning because they can be applied in a physical sense as well. For example, 1 Nephi 15:34 “no unclean thing can dwell with God;” is very relevant to having a clean home. If you are a God fearing (and loving) Christian mama, you are most likely striving to have his spirit in your home. I have found, through personal experience, that I am better able to feel the spirit of the Lord in my home when it is clean. I found my clean spaces invited the spirit to dwell within my home and I find it more difficult to “dwell with God” when my home is a disaster.

A clean home is a happy home mindset shifts

With the above knowledge, we can now work through ways to unlock this magical clean-house happiness! To begin with we might have to shift some mindsets and beliefs surrounding a clean or dirty home. First off cleaning a home is hard work! If it feels hard, you’re not crazy, you’re not alone, and the study above should help validate your feelings even more. BUT having a clean home doesn’t have to be hard, especially if you are doing a little bit everyday!

Do a little bit every day

Take a look at the free schedule I have provided you below, notice anything? there are 4 things that occur every day! Why’s that? Because doing a little bit every day helps prevent pile ups and things backing up or overflowing, and seeing your home with piles and the like can be extremely overwhelming. If you’re anything like me, seeing those dishes overflowing or the mount Everest of laundry in the hamper give me major ADHD paralysis. This is when something feels just too big to overcome or accomplish so one just ignores it and never does anything to resolve it and hopes it will resolve itself or someone else will take care of it. Doing a little bit every day is much more manageable and easier to convince yourself to do because it’s just one load and it’s small, so it feels more accomplishable.

Be nice to yourself

Another mindset shift that needs to be made is our own self talk when our home doesn’t look or feel like we want it to. We need to be kind to ourselves when we see those piles growing around us. If you are struggling with executive functioning disorders or are a recovering perfectionist, it’s okay to make excuses for yourself. Everyone in your house was sick this week, you had visitors and prioritized spending time with them over household chores, your kids needed your undivided attention today, or you needed a BREAK! It’s ALL OKAY! The important part I want to drive home is that it doesn’t matter what state your house is in right now, what matters is the direction you are going. What matters is that you are always striving, but also giving yourself grace along the way.
